    LOU GEHRIG AT COLUMBIA

In 1923, when the Yankees won the World Series for the first time, Lou Gehrig was Columbia University's star player. He signed a contract with the Yankees at the end of his college season. Within two years, he was the Yankees' permanent first baseman, a position he held for 14 years.
