    1922 MONARCHS

This year's team finished in a tie for second place with the Indianapolis ABCs, with 46 wins against 33 losses. Laying on the grass, from left to right, are: Lem Hawkins and Bullet Rogan; (middle row) Oscar Johnson, Newt Joseph, Hurley McNair, Jose Mendez, and Willie Gisentaner; (back row) George Sweatt, Rube Currie, Sam Crawford, Plunk Drake, Frank Duncan, George Carr, and Dobie Moore. Former batboy Jack McClothlin, who lives in Pittsburgh, KS, remembers over-hearing a conversation between catcher Duncan and the plate umpire. "I'll brush off the plate," said the umpire. Duncan replied, "Save your strength. I'll have Rogan throw a low fast ball and just blow the dirt off the plate." (Courtesy of NoirTech Research, Inc.)
