Reds OF Bobby Tolan suffers a ruptured Achilles tendon while playing basketball on the Reds off-season team and undergoes surgery. He'll return to action but reinjure the heel May 7 and miss the entire 1971 season. The front office disbands the basketball team. |

Tigers P John Hiller‚ age 27‚ suffers a heart attack and will miss the 1971 season. Hiller will have seven feet of intestine removed to relieve a cholesterol problem before making a remarkable comeback. |

Chicago Cubs catcher Randy Hundley suffers a severely sprained right knee. Hundley had attained something of an iron man reputation by catching at least 149 games a season from 1966 to 1969. But the heavy work load began to extract a toll in 1970 when he played less than half the season. Hundley will appear in only nine games in 1971 before submitting to surgery. |

Bernice Gera‚ a 39-year-old New York housewife‚ files suit against baseball‚ claiming violation of her civil rights. Mrs. Gera had completed an umpire school and signed a contract to work in the New York-Pennsylvania League‚ but her contract had been voided 6 days later with no explanation. |

The Kansas City Royals new Baseball Academy is officially dedicated. Its stated purpose is "to provide youth with the dual opportunity to pursue an education and at the same time learn the skills of our national pastime." |

On the last day of spring training‚ Chicago White Sox pitcher Joel Horlen tears a cartilage while sliding into second base against the Chicago Cubs in Scottsdale. He returns to Chicago for treatment‚ while the Sox travel to California to open the season. Horlen is expected to be out eight weeks‚ but will pitch in only four. However, he will not notch his first win until June 15. |

With 45‚000 fans on hand at RFK Stadium‚ the Senators beat the Oakland A's‚ 8-0‚ behind the pitching of Dick Bosman. The loser is Vida Blue‚ who allows 4 runs in less than 3 innings. This will be the last Opening Day in Washington. |

In 45 degree weather‚ the Reds play their first opener at Riverfront Stadium‚ dropping a 7-4 decision to the Braves. The Reds make 6 errors‚ 3 by 3B Woody Woodward. The win goes to 6' 6" reliever Cecil Upshaw‚ who missed last season after almost losing the ring finger on his pitching hand. Upshaw was dunking a basketball and his hand got entangled in the net causing the injury. |

Danny Goodwin is chosen as the first player in the June draft and turns down a reported $50‚000 offer from the White Sox to attend Southern University. He will be chosen number one again in 1975. The Sox fail to sign 10 of their 14 picks. The Padres select P Jay Franklin with the 2nd pick. The Expos use the 4th overall pick to take 17-year-old SS Condredge Holloway‚ who never does play pro baseball‚ opting after college to play 13 seasons in the CFL. Boston uses the 15th pick on the first round to take Jim Rice. Future MVP Keith Hernandez‚ who did not play baseball his senior year in HS‚ lasts until the 42nd round (Cards).
