At Yankee Stadium Red Sox rookie Bill Rohr debuts and startles everyone by taking a no-hitter into the 9th inning. But Elston Howard lines a 3-2 pitch for a single to right-center with two outs. Carl Yastrzemski had kept the no-hitter alive with a spectacular grab of a Tom Tresh drive to deep LF to open the 9th. The Red Sox win 3-0 beating Whitey Ford who allows a lead off homer to Reggie Smith and a two-run homer to Foy. |

In California the Orioles earn a doubleheader split when Steve Barber flirts with a no-hitter before allowing a 9th inning one-out double to Jim Fregosi. It is the only hit Barber allows winning 3-0. In game 1 the Angels win 5-4 in 10 innings on Fregosi's RBI single. Lew Burdette (1-0) in relief. notches the last decision of his career. When he's released in September the veteran will finish at 203-144. |

The Cubs Adolpho Phillips drops a fly ball to allow 3 runs to score but homers and triple to help beat the Phillies 8-4. Bill Hands is the winner over Chris Short. |

At Fenway rookie Bill Rohr again tops the Yanks beating Mel Stottlemyre 6-1. Elston Howard's 8th-inning single drives in the only Yankee score. Rohr will return to the minors after the Gary Bell acquisition and resurface with the Indians next year. |

Orioles Steve Barber and Stu Miller combine to pitch a no-hitter but lose 2-1 to the first-place Tigers in the first game of a doubleheader. Barber walks 10 in his 8 2?3 innings but in the 9th two runs come in on a wild pitch and an error by Mark Belanger who drops the ball on a pontential DP that would end the game. Miller walks none. In his first start of the year Barber held the Angels hitless for 8 1?3 innings. Just 2 hits today matches the AL record for fewest safeties by 2 clubs in one game. Three catchers are used by Baltimore a ML record of sorts for a no-hitter. |

In a doubleheader at Yankee Stadium Mantle breaks a 1-1 tie in the 10th with a three-run homer off California reliever Minnie Rojas to give New York a 4-1 win. California takes the 2nd game 4-2 despite Mantle cracking a pinch double in the 9th inning. His hit gives him 2215 one more than Joe DiMaggio. |

The Orioles become the 8th club in AL history with 4 or more HRs in one inning when Andy Etchebarren Sam Bowen Boog Powell and Dave Johnson connect in a 9-run 7th. Also homering for Baltimore is Frank Robinson Brooks Robinson and Paul Blair the only time 7 teammates have each homered. Those HRs make the difference in a 12-8 Baltimore win over the Red Sox. Boston's Carl Yastrzemski hits 2 homers one coming in the bottom of the 7th; the total of 5 in one inning equals the ML record. Rounding out the round trippers is Don Demeter for Boston. |

In the Dodger dugout in 7th inning Don Drysdale waves a white handkerchief of surrender. Holtzman will pitch on weekend passes and tack on another 4 wins without a loss. |

Yankee Whitey Ford nearing 41 announces his retirement from baseball because of an elbow injury. His final appearance was a start in Detroit on May 21st but he lasted just one inning. The stylish lefthander closes out with 236 career wins and only 106 losses for a .690 percentage. He played in only 7 games this season. |

At Candlestick Park, the New York Mets and San Francisco Giants split a pair. The Giants take the opener, 11-2, behind Juan Marichal, who gives up 13 hits and one earned run. The Giants also make 13 hits, including HRs by Ollie Brown and Willie Mays, as the Mets Jack Fisher pitches 4 2/3 innings and allows 11 runs (9 earned); not till 2006 will any Mets pitcher allow as many runs. The Mets win game 2 in 11 innings, 2-1, as Bob Shaw allows 4 hits and goes the distance. Tom Haller'sHR is the Giants only score.

Baltimore blasts California 16-4 in the opener of a doubleheader. Curt Blefary leads the charge with 3 homers including a grand slam. The Birds continue the action in game 2 winning 11-1 behind Tom Phoebus (5-1). Phoebus is 3-for-4 at the plate scores 3 runs and hits a 2-run homer his first in the majors off reliever Jim Coates. |

At Crosley Field Reds P Gary Nolan strikes out 15 Giants including Willie Mays 4 times. But her still loses 4-3. Willie McCovey belts a 3-run homer in the 8th to tie the game and reliever Bob Lee allows the last run to score to pin the loss on Nolan. This is the 11th one-run game in a row that for the Reds a ML record. They won 7 of them. The closest any team has vome to matching the Reds is Brooklyn in 1927 the Cardinals in 1920 and the Giants of 1910. |

The last-place Yankees have the first pick in the free-agent draft and use it to take Ron Blomberg. With the next pick the Cubs tap SS Terry Hughes who will have just 86 ML at bats. All 20 first-round picks are high school players and only 11 will eventually reach the major leagues including John Mayberry (#6 Astros) Jon Matlack (Mets) Wayne Simpson (#8 Reds) Ted Simmons (#10 Cards) and Bobby Grich (#20 Orioles). The O's take Don Baylor with their 2nd pick then in the secondary phase select P Mike Adamson. "Look at Joe Pepitone. He banged up his hands without getting a punch across. Baseball players should know about combinations as well as double plays." Frazier said he would hold a clinic on a day when the Yankees are off. |

Baltimore's Jim Palmer gives up a grand slam-but it's in the minors. Sent to Rochester (International League) to rehabilitate from back problems Rochester manager Earl Weaver starts the 21-year-old against Buffalo in a game moved to Niagara Falls because of racial disturbances on Buffalo's east side. Palmer is given a 7-0 lead but the Bisons score 5 runs in the 3rd four coming home on a grand slam by Johnny Bench. Rochester hangs on to win 10-8. |

In front of a crowd of 40000 Ferguson Jenkins (11-5) pitches the Cubs into a first-place tie with St. Louis by defeating Cincinnati 4-1. The Cubs have won 17 of 19 games. |

At the launching pad in Atlanta Billy Williams Ron Santo and Randy Hundley homer for Chicago and Rico Carty and Felipe Alou answer for the Braves-all in the first inning tying a major league record for homers by 2 teams in an inning.It is the first time its been done in the opening frame. Carty adds another homer later but Glenn Beckert's three-run shot helps put the game out of reach. Ray Culp emerges the winner 12-6. |

In St. Louis the fans get boxing with their baseball in the Cards 7-3 win over the Reds. After Bob Gibson pitched inside to Tony Perez in the 5th inning the pair exchange words after Perez flies out. Both benches empty but there is no fighting until the Reds bullpen led by Bob Lee show up. It takes 12 minutes before the police are needed to restore order. |

The Mets end a 19-game losing streak to Juan Marichal with their first win against the Dominican Dandy 8-7. Marichal's win streak started in 1962. Jack Fisher is the winning pitcher. |

Philadelphia C Clay Dalrymple collects 6 walks in a 19-inning doubleheader against the Astros. The Phillies win the first 9-0 and take the nightcap 4-3 in 11 innings. |

Cardinals P Bob Gibson suffers a fractured right fibula when hit by a Roberto Clemente line drive. Gibson shakes off the injury to walk one batter retire another and finally collapsing after throwing a ball on a 3-2 pitch. He is replaced by Al Jackson who allows a sacrifice. Gibson will be sidelined until Labor Day. St. Louis also loses the game to Pittsburgh 6-4. |

The White Sox sweep a pair from Cleveland winning both games with game-ending home runs a first in the AL. It has happened once in the NL. In Game 1 J.C. Martin a replacement catcher in the 7th hits a 2-run homer in the 9th to make Hoyt Wilhelm the winner in relief. Martin also homers in game 2 but it is Ken Berry's 2-run homer in the bottom of the 16th that wins it for the White Sox 6-5. The Sox have just 7 hits in game 2 while the Indians squander 17.
