Don Bosch

by Rick Wynne (Asheville, NC)

Don Bosch was absolutely the best defensive center fielder I ever saw play in person. His offense was always just average until he got to the Major Leagues, at which point his lack of offensive skill really came to light. A .164 lifetime batting average over parts of 4 seasons in the majors (total of 318 AB) indicates that he must have had other skills to make it that far. It was without question, his ability to cover the outfield. As was said about Garry Maddox, 2/3 of the world is covered with water, the other 1/3 by Don Bosch. I saw him play at McCormick Field in Asheville while he was a Pirate farmhand in the early 60s and he was incredible in his ability to get jumps on the ball and get to seemingly impossible balls hit into the gap. It's too bad there is no such thing as a Designated Fielder, because Don would have had a long career in the majors if he just played defense.
