Remembering Tony LaRussa

by Mike Woods (Richardson, TX)

After Charlie Finley bought the Kansas City Athletics in 1960 there was an essay contest to pick the batboys. I was fortunate to win the contest and was the batboy for the A's in 1961 and 1963 and for the visiting side in 1962. 1963 was Tony LaRussa's first year in the majors with the A's. He asked me many times to play catch with him prior to the games. As I sit here watching the St. Louis Cardinals and the Houston Astros play and see Tony, my mind wanders back to those days and how he befriended a lowly batboy.
