Thanks to Curt Blefary

by Steve Wisensale (P.O. Box 565, Essex, CT)

Prior to the start of 55th annual Yankees Old Timers Game on Saturday, July 21, 2001, I heard the PA announcer call for a moment of silence while he named those "Yankees we lost this year." When I heard the name Curt Blefary I was shocked and saddened. Growing up in Hanover, Pennsylavania, I was an avid Oriole fan and I will be forever grateful to Curt Blefary and those other Orioles of the 1960s for making my life so enjoyable.

I remember a story that Oriole announcer told about Curt. It was in 1966, the world championship year, and I think the Orioles were on the road, perhaps in Chicago. Chuck Thompson, while announcing a game, talked about how Curt's glove made a clanking sound when the ball hit it. One time, when the team bus pulled up next to a junk yard, Frank Robinson broke the silence in the bus by saying, "Hey Blefary, why don't you go over there and pick up a brand new glove for yourself."

Thanks Curt and thanks to Lana for fulfilling his wish to have his ashes scattered at Memorial Stadium even as it was being torn down. I have wonderful memories from Oriole baseball in the '60s and Curt Blefary is a major part of them. Many thanks.

» Steve Wisensale is a lifelong Oriole fan even though he has lived in New England for the last 25 years.
