Mattingly: My Main Guy

by Glenn Weir (Waterloo, Ontario, Canada)

The name "Mattingly" brings back to me floods of memories -- long summer night listening to the Yankees game on New York radio (at night, when the radio waves were clear enough for me to pick up the station on 770); Saturday afternoon and being lucky enough to watch a Yankees game right after Mel Allen and This Week In Baseball; opening the sports section and seeing stuff like "Mattingly 4223" or "Mattingly 4343", indicating of course a good night before at the plate. Don Mattingly, quite simply, is my favourite baseball player of all time. Now, I was born in 1973 so admittedly I have not seen them all; but of all the great players I've seen in my 20+ years as a fan, Mattingly is and will always remain my "main guy". If this guy doesn't make it into the Hall, I'll start to seriously question the Selection Committee's sanity. I mean, some of the guys in there right now are questionable members at best, so I think Mattingly's gotta be in. A pinstripe legend.
