Rick Cerone was a great person. I was only born in 1984 so I may not have seen him play as much but I know a lot about him because he is married to my father's cousin. He was a first round pick in the draft by the Indians. He came out of Seton Hall and recently that college named him their seventh most influential graduate.
Cerone did not do much untill the pressure was on. When Thurman Munson died, the next year the Yankees needed to find a new catcher. Their found him playing for the last-place Blue Jays. With all of the pressure of replacing one of the best players in baseball he rose to the occasion and was voted 7th place for the MVP voting after hitting over .300.
But Rick was not known for his offense. Defense was what made him the player that he was. He set the record for consecutive games without an error for catcher, led the league in fielding for a catcher twice, and he played all positions at least once in his career. He may not be a legend but he was a great guy.
