Notes on Hideo Nomo's Second No-Hitter
by Lee Sinins
Hideo Nomo threw a no hitter last Wednesday night, as the Red Sox beat the Orioles, 3-0.
1. It was Nomo's second career no-hitter. Prior to last Wednesday, the majors didn't
have an active pitcher with two career no hitters since Nolan Ryan retired
after the 1993 season. This is the third longest such drought in history.
There were no active pitchers who already had multiple no hitters to their
credit (1) in between the end of Dutch Leonard's career, after the 1925
season, and Johnny Vander Meer's 2nd no hitter in 1938 and (2) in between
Pud Galvin's retirement after the 1892 season and Cy Young's 2nd career no-hitter, in 1904.
Conversely, the record for the most active pitchers who already had multiple no hitters is 5, in 1974. They were Nolan Ryan, Ken Holtzman, Bill Stoneman, Don Wilson and Steve Busby.
2. Nomo's no-hitter is the earliest, calendar wise, in history. The
previous record was April 7, by Ken Forsch (1979) & Jack Morris (1984).
3. Nomo joined Nolan Ryan, Cy Young, Jim Bunning & Ted Breitenstein
(American Association & NL) as the only pitchers with no hitters in two leagues.
That is also the same list as the pitchers who have thrown no hitters for
multiple teams, with Nolan Ryan being the only pitcher to pitch no hitters
with two teams in the same league (Angels & Rangers).
4. In addition to Nomo's no hitter, Carlos Delgado hit 3 HR. It marked the fourth time a
pitcher has pitched a no-hitter & a hitter hit 3 HRs in the same day.
Here's the instances in which both feats were accomplished in the same day--
DATE: NO-HITTER / 3 HR
May 17, 1963: Don Leppert / Don Nottebart
August 13, 1969: Jim Palmer / Roberto Clemente
July 3, 1970: Clyde Wright / Mike Lum
April 4, 2001: Hideo Nomo / Carlos Delgado
Finally, I also decided to track how often the feats were done on
consecutive days --
May 12-13, 1955 -- Sam Jones, Mickey Mantle
April 22-23, 1964 -- Willie McCovey, Ken Johnson
June 18-19, 1974 -- Bobby Grich, Steve Busby
September 18-19, 1986 -- Reggie Jackson, Joe Cowley
May 29-30, 1977 -- Larry Parrish, Dennis Eckersley
June 1-2, 1990 -- Glenn Davis, Randy Johnson
September 7-8, 1993 -- Mark Whiten (4 HR), Darryl Kile
May 10-11, 1996 -- Ernie Young, Al Leiter
