Tommy Dean

by Thomas Sheffield (Tupelo, MS)

I played against Tommy Dean from Little League through high school. I played for IAHS (Fulton MS) and Tommy played for Iuka MS. He was the best player I ever played against. My best memories in baseball were robbing him of a hit while I was playing 2nd base and hitting a double against Iuka while all the scouts were watching him. Each time he made a point of saying "good catch" or "good hit". He was the star, but he was a team player and a great sport. I've seen many major league shortstops that couldn't hold a candle for him on defense.
