The reference in the Andy Benes bio, "a contract struggle left a bad taste in Benes' mouth, and he left after the '97 season to sign a two-year, $12 million deal with the expansion Diamondbacks" is not quite accurate.
Benes and the Cardinals actually arrived at an agreement, but the faxed copy of the contract did not reach the commissioner's office until after midnight of the deadline day for teams to re-sign with their current clubs. The commissioner's office voided the contract, leaving Benes with the option of not playing with the Cardinals until after May 1, or signing with another team and being allowed to play at the start of the season; he chose to do the latter, signing with Arizona.
