Carl Furillo memory

by Robert Rosenwald (Scottsdale, AZ)

I remember in the early fifties, probably 1954, going to a Brooklyn Dodgers-New York Giants game at Ebbets Field. Willie Mays was on third and the batter hit a ball to deep right field. Willie tagged up and Carl Furillo caught the ball and let loose a frozen rope to home that seemed like it was never more than eight feet off the ground. The ball was in Roy Campanella's mitt as Willie was just breaking into his slide. It wasn't even close.

It was the greatest throw I ever saw.
