Bill Voiselle
Breaking The 0-2 "Waste-a-Pitch" Rule
by Mel Rosenberg

Recently, a Met pitcher gave up a three-run home run after going 0-2 on the batter. I recalled back to 1944 (or was it '45) when Bill Voiselle was the Giant ace. In a game at St. Louis, with the potential tie run on base, the St. Louis batter (perhaps Johnny Hopp) was fed a down-the-middle fast ball. He swung and his homer won the game. Immediately after the game, manager Mel Ott fined Voiselle $100 (remember his salary was about $5000 in those years) for disobeying the waste a pitch rule when you are 0-2 up on a batter.
