Blyleven Denied Again
Shame on the Baseball Writers Association of America
by Aldo Robert (Concord, CA)

Shame on the BBWA in denying Bert Blyleven again this year. Just because he didn't pitch in New York or Boston, or that he didn't throw 100 mph doesn't mean he does not deserve the honor. Doesn't being near the top in Games Started, Shutouts, Innings pitched, and Strikeouts mean anything to you guys? How about 242 complete games? How about a no-hitter? I know, I know, you guys play your games with his ERA vs the Average League ERA and he didn't dominate, but ERA is only one aspect of the game. Besides a career ERA of 3.31 is a great accomplishment. I know, I know, the guy never won a Cy Young. Remember that in one of his best years (1973) the 1,2,3 finishers were named Palmer, Hunter, and Ryan. By the way, Blyleven led the league in shutouts that year with 9 .... NINE!!! and yet he finished tied for 7th. What kind of joke is that? Had he pitched in New York he probably would have won it. He also lost to 2 relievers in '84. Willie Hernandez in '84?

Blyleven is one of the greats and deserves his due.

You guys should be ashamed of yourselves.
