Bill Dineen
Babe Ruth's 60th home run.
by Bill Rielly (West Palm Beach, FL)

This is a little known fact about Bill Dineen, who was my great uncle. When Babe Ruth hit his 60th home run, Bill Dineen was the home plate umpire. The ball was foul and Bill Dineen called it a fair ball as he saw it down the right field line. In those days there was no foul pole and the home plate umpire called it as he saw it down the line. Bill Dineen related this to me in Syracuse, NY a few months before he passed away in 1955. There was quite a stink by the opposing team, but Bill held to his decision. When I asked why, he related, "I was no great fan of "The Babe", but I wanted to give him a cushion over 58 home runs, which at that time was the record."
