Greg Maddux, Artiste

by T.R. Renshaw

While not having been around to see many of the greats of yesteryear [Grover Alexander, Walter Johnson, Lefty Grove], it is my considered opinion that we are watching in Greg Maddux the finest RH of all time. I also consider the late Warren Spahn to be the greatest lefty. A few observations:[1]I tend to disregard stats prior to WW II simply because of the prejudice that endured starting with baseballs inception during the War Between the States.[2]While many pitchers have had greater single seasons {particularly than Spahn} [Steve Carlton, Sandy Koufax, Robin Roberts, Denny McLain etc], the fact remains that if it hadn't been for Mr. Spahn's 14-19 tally with the last place {and first to move} Boston Nationals, it would be Spahn's record and not Cy Young's that we would have the pleasure of watching this consummate craftsman pursue. Thank You.
