Rick Mahler defeats Jose Oquendo!

by T.R. Renshaw (Cocoa, FL)

Just recalling what a great pitcher Rick Mahler was with some pretty awful Braves clubs. The first year (I guess '87) I was "on the beach" in Cocoa Beach. I'd found a place called Shot's Lounge, complete with crab races, ping pong, and naturally, BIG SCREEN T.V.! About the 9th of (I believe) a 3-3 tie, in comes Mahler and pitches 9 or 10 innings of shutout ball. (We were hoping it would be over before they had to kick us out). The unfortunate Cards had run out of arms long before this and enlisted the mound talents of second baseman Jose Oquendo, who managed to shut out the weak-hitting (?) Braves for three innings! I think Mahler might have been their most dangerous hitter too! Can anyone email me a box score of this classic?
