Hank Sauer
Memories From My Father
by Jim Rehberger (Highland, IL)

My father, Lester Rehberger, served in the US Coast Guard during WWII. He was stationed in Brooklyn, NY and served and bunked with Hank Sauer.

When Hank played with the St Louis Cards in 1956, my father tried unsuccessfully to make contact with Mr. Sauer for a visit. Not being able to meet Hank at that time was a boyhood disapointment, since I was and still am a Cardinal fan.

I still cherish those boyhood memories of following Stan Musial and his Cardinal teammates. Listening to Harry Caray on my portable radio into the hot summer nites made me feel like I was there at old Busch Stadium.

To think that Hank Sauer, my Dad's bunkmate was a part of those memories still gives me the shivers and a thrill!

» Jim Rehberger is a Chiropractic physician in Highland, IL and an avid collector of baseball memoribila from the 1950s and 1960s.
