1995: Sojo Takes the Heart Out of the Angels

by Aaron Porter (Seattle, WA)

In 1995 the Seattle Mariners made an amazing 13-game comeback to tie the California Angels for first place in the AL West. The was a one-game playoff. In the seventh innning the bases were loaded and the Mariners up one to zero, Luis Sojo comes up. On the first pitch he sends a broken bat ground ball up the first base line. It rolls all the way to the bullpen, two people have already scored; the throw to the plate is cut off by the pitcher Mark Langston, then he throws it over the catcher's head, then you hear the announcer say, "...and here comes Sojo! Safe!" That four-run play took the heart out of the Angels. The Mariners went on to win and defeat the Yankees in the playoffs before being defeated by the Indians in the ALCS.
