Gale Wade
My First Meeting With A Major-League Player
by Trevor Murphy (Avon Park, FL)

Today I met my first MLB player personally and it was a great experience. I ran into our family business and saw a man standing there. Outside on the car, I saw a license plate and on it, it stated that he was part of the Alumni of MLB. I asked the man if he used to play baseball and he stated yes. [His name was Gale Wade.] Then he went off into who he played for and what position and some of the memories that he remembers from the time he was in the majors.

I told him that I want to play in the majors in the future and I told him I also play centerfield like he used to. He told me that if I found information on him, I would find out how bad his hitting was. He also said that he was a very fast player and use to steal bases a lot. Gale went on to say that he does not like what MLB has become now with players only worried about themselves and not to help the team to win. I was very surprised to hear this from a old player...

I agree with him that MLB has turned into nothing but players wanting more money and the best for them and that they aren't enjoying themselves, just like Gale said. He said when he used to play, if you had a problem with your paycheck you either had to shut up or move to the league in Mexico. It was a very good experience to meet Gale -- if you ever want to talk to a great man, Gale would be the person.
