Cliff Mapes Remembered
The Greatest Throw I Ever Saw
by Joe Morra (Commack, NY)

The Yankees were playing the Cleveland Indians in 1949. Top of the ninth, the Yanks were ahead 2-1. Bobby Avila doubled with no one out. Casey Stengel called time, removed Gene Woodling from left, sent Hank Bauer to left and sent Cliff Mapes to right. The next batter hit a long fly to right, and Mapes caught the ball in front of the 344 ft. sign. Avila tagged up to go to third, Mapes threw the ball on the fly on the third base bag and got him. The next batter hit a fly ball to right -- at the crack of the bat, Bauer ran at top speed to right field. As Mapes caught the ball, to his surprise, there was Bauer doing jumping jacks around him and yelling about the throw. In retrospect, I think Hank was telling Cliff that was the best bleeping throw he ever saw.

» Joe Morra is a life long Yankee fan and is seventy years old.
