Greg Pirkl

by Ben Montgomery

Greg Pirkl was considered one of the Mariners' top prospects through the early-mid 90s. Pirkl earned a call-up to Seattle after winning the Triple-A Home Run Derby in the 1995 Triple-A All-Star Game. A hard-hitting first baseman, Greg enjoyed a few stints in Seattle until various injuries, Tino Martinez, and his own strikeout tendencies short-tracked his career. He briefly played with Boston before heading to a short-lived Japanese League stint. Pirkl finished his career with Boston's Double-A team trying to convert himself into a knuckleball pitcher.

» Ben Montgomery grew up in the Pacific Northwest and is a Mariners apologist.
