Jimmy Ring: A Correction

by Jeffrey Milano (Queens, NY)

According to your Jimmy Ring Biography you say, "Ring may have had previous experience with game-fixing; in 1918, he allegedly was paid $25 by notorious teammate Hal Chase after losing a game."

Donald Honig's book titled "Baseball America" (on page 99) refers to a conversation between Jimmy Ring and Hal Chase. This is a direct quote from the book in proper context: "Before a game that Ring was starting Chase offered to increase the weight of Ring's wallet if Jimmy would dilute his best efforts. Ring told him, 'If you ever say anything like that to me again, I'll beat the livin' shit out of you.'"

Mr. Honig is listed in your pages and therefore you must be familiar with his work. Being that I live in Queens, NY which is where Jimmy Ring was born and died - I have to believe Mr. Honig's version of the story.

» Jeffrey Milano is a baseball historian currently developing a television show about the history of baseball. He's married with two children.
