Joe Rudi
My Brother For a Day
by Gary Messerli

I grew up in Rapid City, SD -- home of Dick Green. In fact, my uncle knew Dick pretty well. Through Dick Green, I became Joe Rudi's brother for a day.

My aunt, uncle and cousin were going to Minneapolis to see the Twins play the A's and asked me if I wanted to come along. To see a major league game? Of course I did!

When we got to the stadium I was surprised when my uncle went up to the will-call window and asked for tickets for Joe Rudi's family. It seems Dick Green got some of Rudi's pass tickets to leave for us.

I was only about 11 years old and from South Dakota and I didn't know about pass tickets. I thought the people at the Twins' stadium really thought we were Joe's family. I spent about half the game worried that an usher would come and drag us out as imposters -- especially after I found out Joe Rudi wasn't even with the team that day. He was on military duty.

Of course, no one came to drag us out of the stadium and I did get to see the game and I did get to at least pretend to be Joe Rudi's brother for a day. Thanks Joe!
