The Mystery of Jake Daubert ... Answered?

by Michael Malone (Plantation, FL)

I just viewed Mark Koch's article on "The Mystery of Jake Daubert" and I might have an answer to his mystery of the Leo Durocher signature, which seemed to be written in a book for Jake Daubert.

Jake Daubert, the ballplayer was my wife's (Jill Daubert) great-grandfather. His son's name was George J. Daubert and Jake's grandson's name is Jake Daubert. And while Jake Daubert the grandson is still alive, George J. Daubert, Jake's son passed away a couple of years ago just shy of his 95th birthday.

Either one of these two could have been given the book, though, I would tend to think that Leo might have given the book to George J., the son of baseball player Jake Daubert - George had been a 'team mascot' for his father's Brooklyn team and later a 'batboy' for the Reds. And throughout the years George often talked to various players who knew his father and others who might not have played with Jake, but played for Brooklyn or some other team in the majors. Why I even heard him talking of going 'duck hunting' with some baseball personalities throughout the years. And just maybe Leo Durocher was one of these men that George had spent some time with.

I'm not sure if George and his wife Dorothy lived in New Jersey - most of their life was spent in Pennsylvania near where Jake Daubert was born. Though, if I come across a 'New Jersey Connection' to your book and George J. Daubert or to George's son, Jake, I will forward another article to this site.

And by the way, if any of the Hall of Fame's Veteran's Committee is reading this article, take a look at Jake Daubert's baseball career and his statistics on the field and while batting, and take time to consider him for election to Cooperstown, which he so rightly deserves.

» Michael Malone is married to the great-grand daughter of Jake Daubert, one of the finest first basemen for Brooklyn and Cincinnati.
