Hank Sauer Was My Hero

by Hal Malen

Hank Sauer was one of the nicest guys. While others brushed us kids aside after a game, Hank always stuck around to sign autographs. Regarding his defense, he may have been slow, but he did have a great arm. In 1948, he was 3rd in assists and led all LF's in that category. In 1949, led the NL in assists. 1950 was 6th in assists. 1951 had 19 assists, 2nd in the NL and led all LF's. 1952 was 3rd in assists.

He and Bob Rush were great players who were stuck with the poor talent on the Cubs during that time.
