Quilvio Veras Scores First Run at Safeco Field

by Rick Lockard (Seattle, WA)

Quilvio Veras scored the first run in Safeco Field on July 15, 1999.

In the third inning, Phil Nevin hit a line drive off Jamie Moyer that bounced twice in the grass then skipped awkwardly over Mariners third baseman Russ Davis' shoulder scoring Veras from second base.

Veras also received the first pitch in the new stadium, a strike thrown by Jamie Moyer.

The description of Nevin's hit is from an article written by Holly Cain and copyrighted by the SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER, July 16, 1999.
