Growing Up With Joe Nuxall
Playing Hooky and Basketbrawling
by Ray Lincks (Hamilton, OH)

Joe Nuxhall and I rode the bus to high school together in 1951. Sometimes, we would get off the school bus at High Street and go to Bill McGuire's pool room. We would skip school and play pool all day. I think the bus driver reported us to the school principal, Mr. Koger. Mr. Koger gave us a strong lecture on what opportunities we had to make good in our lives. We took him seriously and never skipped school again.

I remember when Joe and I were involved in a free-for-all fight at the YMCA in the Hamilton "shop basketball league." About eight players on each team were involved and several were injured badly enough to require hospitalization. Joe and I escaped without injury. Three or four players were suspended from playing in the league for several games, including Joe. I somehow managed to avoid suspension. At the league hearing, we all promised not to fight again.

» Ray Lincks grew up on the same street in Hamilton, Ohio with Cincinatti Reds great, Joe Nuxhall. They attended high school together and played basketball on different teams at the Hamilton YMCA.
