The Walkin' Man, Eddie Yost

by Lou Kitchenmaster (Stanton)

One of the great lead-off hitters of all time, and one of baseball's most underrated players throughout his career, was Eddie Yost. He was a patient, skilled contact hitter possessed a great eye and seldom struck out. Yost holds a career on-base percentage of almost 40 percent --an incredible statistic for a guy with a lifetime batting average of .254. His fielding was one of his most overlooked strengths. Although not especially quick, he was sure-handed, fielding his position with grace and ease.
