The Greek God

by Lou Kitchenmaster (Stanton, MI)

On a bright, sunny afternoon in 1956 in Oxford, MI, I saw my first live major leaguer. It was a little-league all-star game in which I happened to be pitching. We were advised in advance that Pat Mullin, a former Detroit Tiger would be in attendance.

Having started collecting baseball cards in 1952, and being a great Tiger fan, I had a '54 Bowman Mullin, so I figured I'd recognize him. As I carefully surveyed the crowd just prior to game time, I spotted him. He was lean, tall and handsome with a thick shock of peppered-grey hair. I remember thinking to myself that he looked like a Greek god. I was awe-struck!
