Johnny Groth

by Lou Kitchenmaster (Stanton, MI)

One of my favorite all-time Tigers was Johnny Groth. A star in his own right, though much underrated during his 15-year Major League career (12 with Detroit), Groth was a better than average hitter, fielder and baserunner. He compiled a shining lifetime batting average of almost .280, in addition to a very solid OBP of over 35 percent. Statistically and skill-wise, he was very similar to Boston counterpart Jimmy Piersall. Despite Groth's many attributes, he curiously spent only brief tenures with sad-sack teams in Washington, Kansas City and St. Louis.
