All-Star Selections
Only the Present All-Stars Should Be Picked
by Jim Keats (St. John's, NL, Canada)

Now that ML Baseball has decided to allow the winning League in the All-Star game to host the Opening games of the World Series later in the year, it has forced the Managers of the All-Star game to make sure their League wins the game just in case his Team gets into the Fall Classic. In the past, some of the Players were picked for the All-Star game based on their Name, not their Stats. Each League had Players who were in the twilight of their career and in accordance with their Stats for the current season leading up to the All-Star game should not have been selected to play in the Summer Classic. However, due to their NAME and what they did for Baseball in past years they always got selected while some younger Players who were playing better since Opening Day were neglected.

The practice of picking a Player for the All-Star game because of his NAME, (Willie Mays/Hank Aaron, etc.) back in the 1960s has continued even up to last year. It was more or less a popularity contest where the well known Players would play regardless if they deserved to be there or not. I am sure that all Baseball Fans can remember a well known NAME that was selected to the All-Star Team every year even though that Player did not have the Stats to warren such a selection. I wonder what well known Player(s) will make it this Summer even though he should be watching the game instead, while some younger, deserving Player is casted aside.

The All-Star game should be for the Players who are having a good season, Stats wise, since Opening Day and not for the Players who Stats were good last year. Certainly not for the Players who were Stars several years ago and are hanging around awaiting another popularity selection to the All-Star game.

It's time for the Fans to give the Manager's the best Players since Opening Day, Stats wise, so that he can use the Present Day Stars to win the All-Star game thus ensuring that his League will get the Opening two games of the World Series later in the year.

The NAME Players who are in the Twilight of their careers can be picked by the Manager's as an Honorary Player who will not be counted in the lineup as an active Player but for SHOW only. This way the Fans can see the former Stars at the All-Star classic and some deserving Players who are having a good year will get their well deserving opportunity to play in the All-Star game.
