Jumpin Joe Dugan
My Great-Uncle
by Jean Yavis Jones

Joe Dugan was my grandmother's brother. My Dad told me that he got his nickname because he kept jumping from the Philadelphia Athletics to go to New York. Uncle Joe told me he didn't like playing in Philadelphia because he didn't like the fans. I asked him why and he said "Philadelphia fans would boo at a wake." Maybe he was kidding, but I don't think so. Another story about Jumpin Joe him was that when Connie Mack met with my great grandfather (Joe's father) to work out a deal (money) for Joe as a player, my Great Grandfather said he would throw in my twin great uncles Leo and Leonard Dugan for another $50. Mack turned him down. Uncle Leo and Leonard went off to Holy Cross college on baseball scholarships, and were also first class tennis players.
