John Duffie

by Janice Johnson (Atlanta, GA)

John Duffie was born in Greenwood, South Carolina on October 4, 1945. An awesome right-handed pitcher throughout high school (attended Avondale High in Decatur, Georgia) he was born for baseball. John Duffie stood 6'7" at 210 lbs. He went to Brewton-Parker College on a baseball scholarship and was recruited for the Minor Leagues.

John Duffie played in the Texas League -Albuquerque and was the Texas League Pitcher of The Year in 1967.

He was signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers and oh yes,he played for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1967. He made his debut in 1967,yet only started in two games for the Dodgers. He pitched 9.2 innings and had six strikeouts. His dream crumbled as he was in a serious car wreck that ended his career.

John Duffie later recuperated and maintained his friendship with Tommy Lasorda - who never forgot him. Over the years Tommy maintained contact with John Duffie often while in Atlanta playing against the Braves. The connection that happens between a player and coach is something always remembered.

John Duffie went on to become a coach of girls traveling softball and many times won championships (state and national).

A heck of a nice guy, a formidable pitcher, he is a great lover of baseball. And in particular, the Dodgers, oh those Dodgers....
