Bob Buhl: The Mets' Favorite Pitcher

by Joe

Bob Buhl may have been a Dodger killer, but the early Mets seemed to always do well against him. For example, he was the starting Cub pitcher in a May 1964 game that the Mets won 19-1. There was a famous story associated with this game: a Mets fan called a newspaper to ask how the Mets did that day and the reply came, "They scored 19 runs." The caller responded, "Did they win?"

As a young Mets fan of the day (born in 1952), I always looked forward to a Mets came when Bob was the probable opposing pitcher. Bob Buhl was one of the few NL pitchers of the era that the Mets had half a chance of winning against.
