Gene Woodling Remembered
First Hit in Franchise History
by Dave Hilsheimer (Sun Prairie, WI)

I was at the first game of the 1961 Washington Senators, which later became the Texas Rangers. JFK was also at the game -- opening day of the 1961 season. I recall seeing Gene Woodling, in his classic, feet together crouched batting stance, lash out and stroke a double high off the 30' right field wall at old Griffith Stadium, the first hit in Washington Senator/Texas Ranger franchise history.
