Warren Spahn, A True Hall of Famer On and Off the Field

by Roy Hanks (Tulsa, OK)

I had the opportunity to sell a Cadillac to Mr. Warren Spahn in 2001 and will never forget the experience. Warren asked me to come to his house to show him the car because he was unable to come to our office by himself. When I got to his home he showed me in and we began talking. Although I was 25 and he was 80 our conversation lasted at least an hour before baseball was even brought up. It was amazing to listen to him re-cap his war experiences, the differences between baseball then vs. today's money driven version and then finally his potential car. He was very engaging and personable and we talked for three hours. After he bought the car I kept in touch with him for a few months and felt like a better person than I did before. Most of all I was glad to have had the opportunity to speak with a true athlete and a true hero.
