An all-around athlete
by Leo Girard (Meaford, ON)

We all knew Ferguson Jenkins in his hometown of Chatham ON. He was always a soft-spoken gentleman "of the old school." I first met him on the basketball court as a very capable player at both ends. He loved hockey and would sneak in pick-up games (probably in violation of his contract). Gene Dziadura, one time Philly prospect until injury, was Fergie's mentor and teacher. They worked hours in the gym at old Chatham Collegiate to perfect Fergie's control, which paid great dividends in the bigs. Did anyone have a better SO to W ratio?
