Phil Plantier Failed Me

by Andrew Giambrone (Amherst, MA)

At one time shortly after his excellent 1991 season, I owned every single Phil Plantier card ever made. My favorite was the '90 Topps Stadium Club -- a posed picture of him standing upright holding a bat on his shoulder. He looked like a normal hitter in that photo. Not unusual, like his batting stance, which looked like he was sitting on the toilet. Plantier had a lot of power with his uppercut swing, but he couldn't handle the off speed stuff, and when pitchers found that out, they exploited it. The Red Sox lost faith in him, so they traded him to the Padres where he put up good homerun and RBI totals in '93. But that success didn't last, so the Padres gave up on him and he drifted to three other teams before retiring. It was a shame though, I spent a lot of hard earned kid-money on his cards.
