Frank Edwin "Tug" McGraw died last night from brain cancer. He was a true gamer. Always a fighter. He was with the Mets early in his career and made a name for himself as a gutsy pitcher with heart and soul. He was a two time all star. He also won two world series rings with the 1969 miricle Mets and the 1980 Phillies. He lived his life by his own words "You Gotta Believe" and lived that right up until the end. My most recent memory of Tug was just this past September. The Phillies final game at Veteran's Stadium. Tug was there with all the fanfare, excitement and tears. He arrived by limo and raised his arms as he did when he got the last out to win the 1980 world series. He was amazing with the fans. He was loved by Philadelphia. He touched everyone because he had a calm, warm way about him that everyone loved. He was always very fan friendly. My son was very touched by Tug. He was at a Lakewood Blueclaws game last year. My son approached him with a Clearwater Phillies cap and asked for an autograph. Tug signed the hat with a smile and a chat. When Tug was diagnosed with cancer last March my son wore that hat until he heard Tug was doing well. Today he wears that hat again with tears in his young eyes. Tug will be a hero to many and always remembered for the courage, devotion and love he never failed to show. Only the good die young...
