Pete Grey
The man, The Professinal Baseball Player
by Steve Duda (Nanticoke, Pennsylvania)

I have very fond memories of Pete Gray. He became a friend of the family's when I was a little boy of 9 years old. Now I'm 41 years of age and the passing of my father recently brought back those memories that impacted my little league playing days and my life. It was in the fall of 1972 that my family moved from the city of Nanticoke, to what is called the Hanover Section of Nanticoke. I naturally had to make all new friends. I was scared a place I never seen before. Our landlord had a grandson who introduced me to the first friend I made in this new town. His name was Pete Gray. I remember going to this house, one house away from ours and we went down into the basement of this house, I was a little scared, then this tall man appeared with only one arm and he introduced himself and shook my hand. I was simply shocked to see this man show me how he put his glove on and gave me pointers on how to catch a baseball. From that day on even as a little boy I realized you can do anything that you truly put your mind too. Mr Gray was truly a private person. He didn't like to talk to the press, be he always took the time to talk to children and share his knowledge of the game. I remember he used to always watch and cheer on our little league team. He was a hero to us kids growing up in the Hanover Section of Nanticoke. I know probably right now my father and Pete Gray are talking about old times. God bless you, Pete and you, Dad.
