None Nicer

by Debra Johnson Dick (Lawton, OK)

In 1991, after the death of my husband, I was faced with a dilemma. He had a large hunting dog and I was not able to care for it. My aunt, Kate Nichols, was good friends with Allie Reynolds from working on the Red Earth festival in Oklahoma City. She told him about my situation, and he said he would take care of it. He and my aunt Kate drove to my house in a new Lincoln and picked up this large dirty dog. He looked like a hero from a movie in his starched jeans and western shirt. He loaded the dog into his nice new car and told me he would take good care of him. A few weeks later I got a call that Allie had a name plate made for "Bubba" to go over his stall in the kennel and that the dog was going well. I will never forget the kindness he showed me. He was a true gentleman and hero to me. I never realized he was a baseball star from the "golden age" until several years later.
