One of two pleasant suprises in the outfield for the 1989 Chicago Cubs, along with Rookie of the Year centerfielder Jerome Walton, was rookie leftfielder Dwight Smith. A prolific hitter for many years in the Cubs minor league system, Smith made the most of his opportunity in 1989 and finished high in the ROY balloting. Although he was regarded as a speedy but somewhat shaky outfielder, Smith got the bulk of the playing time in left field for the 1989 Cubs. An accomplished singer, Smith also was called on to sing the pre-game national anthem.
