Sam Hairston

by John Cunningham (Colorado Springs, CO)

Sam Hairston was voted "most popular" in the mid-fifties as a catcher for the Colorado Springs "Sky Sox", then the Class A farm team of Chicago White Sox. He was a very effective and promising C in a system which had Sherman Lollar behind the plate for the parent organization. He was presented a new '55 Pontiac by the local fans. While I will not SWEAR to it, I believe Sam -- his son Jerry Hairston -- and Sam's GRANDSON, Jerry Hairston Jr. are the first African-American 3 generation MLB family.

» John Cunningham composed a magazine length history on the 1950-58 Colorado Springs Sky Sox and is the owner of the only uniform retired by the team (#7, Jerry "Pops" Crosby)
