Chris Hoiles Memory

by Joe Cramer (McLean, VA)

I grew up in Virginia, rooting for the Baltimore Orioles. Chris Hoiles was a solid player, and I saw him hit a few home runs at Camden Yards. I also rooted for the Seattle Mariners, and one night I stayed up to watch a Mariners game.

I remembered a popular "NO FEAR" brand T-shirt that people wore those days that read, "Bottom of the ninth, down by three, bases loaded, two outs, full count...NO FEAR!" Anyway, that same situation came up for Hoiles, and he actually hit the grand slam, a high bomb to left field. I don't know if that exact situation of a walk-off home run, down by three with two outs and a full count in the bottom of the ninth has ever happened before, but seeing it happen when it happened was cool.
