Memories of Mel Allen

I used to go to the Yankee games a lot back in the 50s and 60s, and when I couldn't go I would listen to Mel Allen's broadcasts of the games. Besides his trademark phrases he had a couple of others that stayed with me all these years and still do. At least once every game he would go into a routine about a loyal Yankee fan who carried things to extremes -- such as the time he fell into a barrel of flour and was petrified because he thought everyone would think he was wearing WHITE SOX! And when Ed Lopat (my all-time favorite pitcher) was on the mound, Mel would intone, slowly and solemnly, "Steady...Eddie...Lopat." That always got me. What a great broadcaster Mel Allen was, and I miss him.

» Zita Carno -- a Yankee fan ever since I learned what the game was 60 years ago.
