Carlos Hernandez, Competitor
by Paul Bohannon (The Woodlands, TX)
Exciting was the only way to describe Carlos Hernandez' style of play. His pitching was daring. He swung the bat hard. And he did run hard. That competitive drive was his downfall. In a close game in what was then new Enron Field, Hernandez needed a base hit. He swatted the ball -- a hot liner. It was a close play. He dove into first base and was safe. But his pitching was injured, having torn his rotator cuff in the headfirst slide.
His pitching art is still there. The question is, can he endure?
