Garagiola on Berra

by Bob Shank, Jr. (Tucson, AZ)

With the radio on in my car some years ago on my way to a Cleveland Indians spring training game at Reid Park in Tucson, the local sports channel was interviewing Joe Garagiola. In one of those freak moments in time/space, I was listening to Joe retelling a tale of how he and Yogi Berra were driving on their way to the same ballpark a year earlier on the same route I was taking at the moment. According to Joe [paraphrased]:

"Yogi and I were on the way to the ballpark, and it was hotter than Hades in Tucson. We were sweating like crazy so I asked him, 'Yogi, why don't you turn on the air conditioning?' And you know what he said? He says, 'It's too hot to roll up the windows."
I laughed so hard I didn't realize I'd missed the turnoff into the ballpark until I got to Alvernon, three streets later.
