Chris Coletta

by Fred Bellemore

A perennial .300 hitter forgotten in the Red Sox system in the late 60s and early 70s, Coletta finally got his big-league chance when Boston traded him to California in mid-August of 1972 to obtain Andy Kosco for the stretch drive. Coletta hit .300 in his month-and-a-half stint with the 5th-place Angels, homering off Jim Perry in what turned out to be his second-to-last major-league at-bat in a late-September 2-1 win over the Twins, as he never again returned to the majors.
